“Prevention is better than cure.” Out of a country’s health budget, a large proportion should be diverted from treatment to spending on health education and preventative measures. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Having a sound mind and body can do a myriad of things in one’s life. Here a major portion of the national budget is redirected from treatments to health awareness and promotions for the sole purpose of preventing the disease. I strongly disagree with the above statement as health awareness classes and promotion can influence persons to an extent only, and it is a prolonged process to attain the desired outcomes from the residents; apart from that, lack of budget on the treatment will eventually cause a disruption in the health system.
Primarily, Spreading health promotions and awareness classes across the country can only make a minor impact on the citizens. Moreover, teaching and make people practice healthy preventive measures is huge time-consuming programs, and the administrators could not anticipate the result as being a healthy body and mind should come within one’s self. In my own experience, I had provided health education as part of my curriculum to the patients of rehabilitation centres, but they will only be reinforced at that time only, and they will come again for the treatments. For instance, In India, the tobacco company selling their cigarette with the caption of Smoking is injurious to health which is also a kind of warning or awareness to give the people indirectly, but still people using tobacco.
Secondly, Allocating national funds into the prevention criteria rather than on treatments can make an unstable fragile health system. This might eventually cause detrimental effects on the inhabitants of the country. Moreover, for people who suffer from some diseases, it might not be the responsibility of their awful health habits, so not providing sufficient care and treatments to these poor people would make them more vulnerable to that particular diseases. For example, people with indigenous hormonal disorders cannot be cured by health promotion and awareness classes. They should be treated adequately with proper treatments. It is true that health awareness is mandatory to prevent the further spread of diseases; however, reducing the budgets for treatment and reallocating on preventive measures is not a wishful notion.
In conclusion, Investing more money in health awareness and promotions instead of treatments is not mandatory, and in this worst scenario, the Government should direct their focus on testaments. I firmly believe that treatments should be the primary focus other than prevention.
