Family is the place where everyone stays united. Elderly people are the essence of the family. There are both pros and cons of old people living in the house. In this essay, I will highlight the merits and demerits of elderly people living in a joint family, along with some relevant examples.
In India, people still prefer to stay in a joint family, and it is very common to stay with parents even after getting married. There are numerous benefits to staying with elderly people. Firstly, old individuals have more wisdom, so they can guide us very well. They can suggest new alternatives to problems. Moreover, they have patience, so they can easily deal with difficult situations. Secondly, as elders stay in joint families, children get a chance to stay with their grandparents. The love that grandparents shower on their grandchildren is priceless. For instance, in India, children usually sleep with their grandparents, who tell different stories every day, instilling cultural values in kids. Also, nowadays, both partners are working, so older people can help look after the house.
However, as every coin has two sides, there are a few drawbacks to old people living in the family. Sometimes, elderly people have rigid beliefs that they like to follow, and these rigid thoughts can sometimes cause conflicts within the family. To cite an example, some elderly people are still against working women. In today’s era, educated women like to be independent and cannot stay home after marriage. A career is a priority for most women nowadays. Another issue could be that sometimes old people have health issues and need constant attention. In today’s busy life, it becomes a bit difficult to provide continuous attention, so to overcome this, one has to hire an attendant for elderly individuals, which can increase the financial burden.
