In some countries, the average weight of people is increasing and their level of health and fitness is decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

In recent years, a lot of people in most countries have been experiencing a steady increase in weight, however health and fitness levels keep declining. It seems to me that several factors attribute to causing this problem, notably among which are the excessive intake of processed foods and unhealthy lifestyle habits. Quality and healthy food production could curb this problem.

To begin with, to solve the problem of less farm produce and hunger, various governments all over the world invests in the mass production of food using machines and fertilizer. The preservatives used in keeping the farm produce edible over a period long time contain chemicals which is a major risk factor for obesity and other health conditions. The Centres for disease control propose that the reason for the rising number of overweight and its attending problems in the United States is a result of excess processed foods ingestion.

Additionally, a lot of people around the world have jobs that demand that they sit for long periods behind computers or other such technological devices. These people, after work, would most often rush home in a car or a bus, eat, watch TV or go straight to bed with little body exercise or workouts done each day, resulting in the accumulation of excess body fat. Recent studies showed that people who do not make time to exercise are oftentimes faced with a steady buildup of body weight.
To solve this problem, I would suggest that governments everywhere do not only focus on the quantity of food produced but for most importantly, its quality also. People should not only have access to cheap foods but healthy ones. A lot more people would prefer to pay more to healthier choices of foodstuff than cheaper and unhealthy ones. Food can be produced all year round in smaller quantities, which will meet consumer demand yet not have to be shelved for long durations.

In conclusion, the average weight of a person is an important indicator of their health status. As such, individuals and governments alike should pay more attention to bettering their health by eating healthy and adopting healthy lifestyle habits.
