The four pie charts illustrate and compare the electricity production from conventional thermal, nuclear and renewables in Germany and France in 2009. Energy can be measured in billions of kilowatts.

Overall, it is witnessed that the majority of electricity was generated by conventional thermal in Germany, whereas nuclear produced the highest power in France.

To begin with Germany, a total of 560 billion KWh of energy was generated, while France produced 50 billion KWh less energy in the same year. Similarly, conventional thermal energy produced almost three-fifths of the power in Germany which was six times smaller than in France. Moreover, in Germany, about three-quarters of the nuclear source was utilized to generate power, unlike France, which produced just under a quarter. Moving on to renewables, this accounted for four quite similar proportions for both countries ranging from around 14% to 17%.

Getting back to the details, in Germany, both biomass and wind comprised similar ratios at 39.3% and 36.9%, respectively. In contrast, the percentage of hydroelectricity and solar collectively made up just under a quarter. However, the situation was very different, for instance, where hydroelectricity constituted 80.5% of the total number, with biomass, wind and solar making up the remaining 20%. Neither country used geothermal energy.
